Creeping Cats (indoor game)

Players: 6 or more
Materials: 2 books to mark safe zone
Surface: carpeted

Place two books about 10 feet apart and imagine a line stretching between them. This is the safe zone.

All players get down on their hands and knees. The Cats start out behind the safe zone while the Dogs wait for them on the opposite side of the room, facing away. Choose one player to be the Top Dog. This Dog will listen for the approach of the Cats and tell the other Dogs when to turn and chase them.

At the start signal, the Cats creep slowly toward the Dogs while the Top Dog listens for their approach. Since the Dogs can’t see them, the Cats must be very quiet and sneaky. Any cat lucky enough to get close to a Dog may tag him and take him out of the game. Of course, when this happens, all the Dogs know the Cats have arrived and so turn and crawl after them as they scurry for the safe zone. Any Cat tagged by a dog goes out of the game as well.

But what usually happens is that a Cat or two comes very close before the Top Dog hears her and yells “Cats!” That’s when all the Dogs turn and give chase.

The Dogs win if they can chase the Cats, tag them, and take them all out of the game. The Cats win if they can take the Dogs out of the game by sneaking up and tagging them. It’s usually a pretty close match!
