Hen & Chicks (Outdoor game)

Players: 6 to 12
Materials: None
Surface: Paved or grassy

One player is the Hen, another the Fox. They should be fairly evenly matched. The remaining players are the Chicks. They line up behind the Hen, holding waists or shoulders.

Fox marches up to Hen and says, “Mother Hen, you Chicks look good today.” Hen replies, “Mr. Fox, go away!”

Fox then tries to capture the last Chick by pulling her from the line, while Hen tries to protect her. The other Chicks can join in by wrapping themselves around the threatened Chick, but the line must never break apart. If it does, Fox may tag any and all of them.

Each time a Chick is captured, he or she is out of the game—placed in Fox’s Cooking Pot. The game ends when all the Chicks are captured—and cooked.
